Posted by freyafjord on 7/19/2007 Does anyone have experience with treeless saddles? I have been thinking about trying one but then I hear something negative about them, usually that they don't have the stability of a traditional saddle. However, there are certainly potential benefits also. I've heard people say they are very comfortable and you have closer contact with the horse. I've also heard that horses move more freely since the fit is likely to be better and there is less interference with the shoulder. At one time there was only a limited variety available but now it seems you can get all types including dressage saddles. They are also making them with a twist and increased rigidity and stability. Some have a safety issue in not having a safety bar for the stirrups, only a ring, but others do have the stirrup bar. The easier fitting of treeless saddle is a huge benefit. I just had my horse at a saddle fitting this spring but now she hates the saddle that was perfect for her then. Fortunately I have a wider saddle that she likes. I still keep wondering if she will feel still better in a treeless saddle. Maybe I should just go ahead and get the 7 day trial to find out for myself. | |

I haven't heard of "treeless saddles." Are they like bareback pads? I rode on one of those once. I hadn't been riding dressage long, but I wanted to practice. I got a chance to ride a Tennessee Walker mare on a trail ride with some other people and they offered me a "bareback saddle" with a girth and stirrups. It was so great! We rode for about two hours, and after that, I was not sore ONE BIT! I would really like to find one to ride my horse with one day.

Betty,
I've ridden in a treeless--I didn't much like it myself, but it was a long, long time ago, before the new age of treeless, and also because I'm so habituated to those big, heavy, bulky german models. I have heard that it is really a lot better on the horse's back and it really increases the connection between horse and rider; perhaps I need to try it on a different horse,
I'd go ahead and do the seven day trial, why not? Report back and let us know how it goes!
