WINTER HAIR

Posted by sadie_lover on 12/24/2007 on sadie_lover's blog

Today I came across a funny thought that made me laugh. If you are lucky enough to live in the cold area you know all about winter hair unless you take the time to clip your horse. It all starts when the days get shorter and colder and you start to bundle yourself up just to take a few carrots out to the barn and see your somewhat slick and shiny coated friend greeting you for a treat. After a week or two something starts to happen-WINTER HAIR- and sooner or later your beatiful horse has turned into a great big furry moster!! In the mid winter you start to think about what your horse actually looks like underneath all that fluff and if they will ever be the same again! Finally when spring arrive a fun yet distasteful process begins-yes Shedding!! And oh boy is it messy! Many people let their horses shed out themselves but not me! I cant wait to shed out the new horse waiting to be discovered-so i help a little. You can spend hours out there with a shedding blade or brush taking of layers and layers and buckets and cartons of hair but when your done-they look the same as when you started! So you call it a day and return to your home. The response- "take off those dirty clothes! Your getting hair everywhere!" You take a shower. The response- "your clogging the sink with your load of horse hair!" You go somewhere with a friend. The response- "you've got a peice of hair on your cheek!" You might ask yourself is it worth it-Hell yah! Its the little things we do with our horses that bring us all together as people and equine friends! Sometimes when you doubt your abilities to love, you have to ask yourself "What would the world be like without horses?"

I used to clip horses for a living. I was in grad school, and after I'd done a couple of horses I'd rush off to class, where I'd sit there counting the minutes until I could get a shower. I always left a little pile of very fine hair behind!
