When Is TOO COLD To Ride?????

Posted by Beissin on 1/15/2008 on Beissin's blog

WOW. I decided to ride today, and although it was a good decision, I will definitely think twice before saddling up tomorrow, if the weather is anything like today's!

My horse was SOOO GOOD! We rode past the cow farm for THE FIRST TIME! Missy was all twisted around trying to see and she was really tense. I just sang to her all the way about how brave she is, and how beautiful, and so on. We made it. So then, we had new territories to explore, and we crossed TWO small bridges! My poor girl! She is such a trooper! It was absolutely FREEZING cold, and we had already accomplished a lot, so we turned to go home. BACK over the bridges and BACK past the cows! When we crossed the last intersection before the farm, my brave song turned into being about how my life will go on without my toes, since they had all frozen and fallen off. I guess I scared myself, because when we got pretty close to the farm, I dismounted and walked the rest of the way because I could not feel anything below my knees. I hurried up and put the blanket back on her and turned her out and went home, and... WA-LAAA! All 10 TOES SURVIVED THE RIDE! Such a nice blessing! Of course, a heated indoor arena would be, too! (hint, hint!)

I am really proud of my girl. I love my horse, and she loves me!

I think it might be too cold to ride right now. At least since I have that crappy thing that's going around and just won't quit... We're spoiled here in Albuquerque, where it frequently warms up to 50 during the day int he winter. So when we have a day like this, where the wind's blowing and the temp is only in the 30s, we have to complain. Amber the working student thinks I'm nuts.

I don't think you're nuts. I used to go to Florida every winter when I worked with Standardbreds and I would DIE if the temperature was in the 50's and 60's! Also, no matter how hot I was from working at the barn, I wouldn't go to the beach unless it was 90 or above- the breeze is just too chilly- especially when you're wearing a bathing suit on the beach!

It was SUPER COLD yesterday, but today is better. I even took off MISSY's blanket while she's out in the field today! I will definitely be riding later! YIPPEE!-Praise The Lord!
