Posted by KatelynJ on 11/22/2007 on KatelynJ's blog Ella can be considered the "problem" horse at the barn. It's time for her to start training and getting rid of her bad habits. Her past owners let her get away with murder because they didn't necessarily know what they were doing. She was trained to be a "trail horse" and they were happy as long as they got on her and "went". Needless to say, she needs a lot of work. The past owners, although, informed me that she can lunge, which will be my saving grace but we'll see how well she can do so. The first time i tried to groom Ella, it was a pain. She does not do well in cross ties and it's a struggle for her to pick up her feet or for her to stand still. I'm going to start slow with Ella and try to break her habits and train her in baby steps. Any suggestions on what to do with this mare? -Katelyn |

Gain her trust, first of all. Seems like she wasn't handled and doesn't have ground manners. I'd start from the very beginning, pretending she's totally unhandled--rub her all over, give her lots of love (but not treats). You might get some Parelli or John Lyons DVDs and watch their ground training techniques. You want to teach her to ground-tie, so cross ties won't be a big deal. Also, you might try just tying her up (quick release knot) to directly to the wall--she might be better that way. Some horses don't know about cross ties and get nervous in them. Reward her good behavior with lots of petting and voice--If she picks up her foot and holds it for longer than normal, Reward!, as you said, baby steps!

Ahh thank you very much! I can't say that i've worked with a horse that has had this little experience before..it's quite overwhelming but I'm sure in time she'll be a wonderful horse. Tomorrow we start! :]
