Never give up on an old horse that has heart! We got home late yesterday afternoon and
found Lady lying on the ice looking almost dead. Some blood was spread out on the ice that
appeared to have come from somewhere in her rear. Things looked very grim for Lady. The property slopes a bit and she was facing
the wrong way to get up easily so we grabbed her legs and pulled her over. Then she tried to get up but couldn’t stay up
on the slippery ice. After doing this a
couple more times, she got over onto some snow near a fence. Again we tried to pull her over to get her the
right way to get up but she still didn’t make it. She was starting to really
shiver by now and we put blankets all over her. Here the snow was piled up a
bit and that got in her way. We decided
at this point to give her some Banamine.
Banamine is a fast acting NSAID that should give some pain relief and
maybe could help calm her too. We
shoveled the snow away the best we could.
About 15-20 minutes after giving her the Banamine she tried to get up a
little more often but was turned the wrong way against the fence and
the snow. It was difficult to turn her
here because of the fence so we wrapped a rope around her feet and used that to
pull her over. This time it
worked!! She got up and shook the ropes
off her feet and started looking for dinner.
This morning she is still standing and has had her breakfast. I don’t know what caused the bleeding. There were ravens standing around her. Possibly they pecked at her. When it gets lighter and warmer we can give
her a better inspection. Unfortunately
the nearest vet is 45 minutes away and probably not available on Sundays. The next nearest vet is about 1 ½ hours away.

Oh no. I'm so sorry to hear about Lady but glad she's up and looking perky again.

I can relate to this. My Tamara is 20. We just went through 7 months of hell with her. Swollen hock and lame. Couldn't even stand up without banging against the stall wall. I came within a phone call of putting her down after my farrier crossed himself and said it was the "humane" thing to do. My vet agreed (after I paid a small fortune to have her leg flushed with antibiotics). But when you've been with a horse for a while you just sort of know how they are. She wasn't giving me that "I'm tired of life" look. Back in the saddle again.
Hang in there Lady!

Lady is still standing tonight and looking good. We figured out it took 8 rollovers to get her to a place where she could stand up. She either read our minds or maybe she was tired of us messing with her and decided to just get up.
It sounds like Tamara is doing well. Good luck and best wishes for her.
