A Quarter Horse Is Good For Working With Cattle, Right?

My Quarter Horse doesn't like cows. That's okay. Tonight when two Texas Longhorns got loose in a horse pasture, MISSY stepped aside and let some other horses do all the work. There were so many other horses willing to do the job that no one even really missed her! First, my boss rode in with his cow horse- a Palimino stud. Next his student (who didn't get the lesson she figured on!)- a woman riding her Palimino Paint gelding in English tack and riding breeches. Next, my boss's wife, a jumping rider, came charging in on her old sorrel gelding in a Western saddle- both of their's red hair flying! After some time went by, another man was talked into saddling up his good sorrel mare and they joined the party. Last, but not least, here came a girl on break from college riding... a Saddlebred!

These two cows sure got a lesson from all these horsemen and horsewomen! It went something like... "If you're gonna get out, RUUUUUUNNNNN!" So, it got dark and I unsaddled my already-cool mare and left her in cross-ties while I ran upstairs to get my lasso. I stopped by the feed room to grab some sweet feed and another woman and I entered the pasture filled with crazed cows and frustrated cowhands. Already, a horse had been switched out for a fresh mount. Would this nightmare never end?

Tired of the lack of progress being made, I walked up to a cow where he was cornered by five horses. I swung my loop real wide... and,... missed! I tried again. Jackpot! There went one mad cow bucking and running toward the other end of the pasture, dragging my rope by her horns! That was okay. As soon as I could, I handed the other end of the rope to my boss, who somehow sent the cow to the indoor arena. Next, I roped the other cow! Well, it took a couple of missed tries, but I got her, handed the rope off to my boss, and we all headed into the indoor arena to wrestle the lassos off the cows' heads before we sent them into their newly-fixed pasture. THAT was fun. We tried buckets of food as bait as we tried to loosen the knots with a carrot-stick, a whip, and finally, a rake! All I can say is, after a night like that, I am SOOOOO ready for bed! Oh yeah- and I finally remembered to put MISSY in her stall and promise her that I'll spend more time with her tomorrow. The End!
